On November 14, Packt Publishing announced Joomla! as the the winner of the 2006 Open Source Content Management System Award.
Joomla! triumphed on the first price, winning $5,000, and received the Packt Open Source CMS Award. Drupal was second and Plone came in third place.

Award rules

Only nominated open source content management systems can join.

One subject can nominate only one system.

5 content management systems with the most nominations will get into the finals.

Best three systems will be selected by a group of three judges.
The last, fourth, voting comes from visitors on www.PacktPub.com website.

All three judges are independent and their decision is final.

Winning CMS receives 5 000,- US dollars, second place wins 3
000,- US dollars and the third place 2 000,- US dollars.

Packt Publishing is independent and has no influence or power over the 5 finalists or the winner.
Final result, which came from judges from The Open Source Collective, MySQL, the Eclipse Foundation, and CMSPros, and 16 000 visitor on www.PacktPub.com, have decided the first place between Joomla and Drupal. As a special circumstance, four independent judges had to be involved to decide a winner. More than 70 different Open Source Content Management Systems was nominated for the award.
Joomla! is the youngest CMS of the five finalists having originated by the then Mambo development team in August 2005. Joomla! was chosen due to its ease of installation and use along with the active development and community that supports the project.
Core team member Alex Kempkens said the award was a wonderful surprise. "I would personally like to thank Packt for their contribution to the Joomlasphere — by publishing Joomla! guides and by running such a successful competition," he said.
